Caves in Buckfastleigh Quarries

The Trust's cave studies centre is located in Buckfastleigh, Devon, Southwest England. Close to Dartmoor and the South Devon coast, the Centre is situated on a large outcrop of Devonian Limestone called Buckfastleigh Hill in the River Dart valley. It is part of a larger property designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. There is accommodation for 25 residents, and a wide range of educational and research facilities. The Centre is used by primary and secondary school groups, and by students from further and higher education.

The Pengelly Centre provides comfortable but basic self catering accommodation which is reasonably priced. The centre is NOT of hotel standard and if you require that kind of standard you should stay at a hotel. Users will need to bring their own bedding, washing kit and towels. The kitchen is equipped with basic utensils and cooking equipment, but groups should bring any specialist cooking equipment that they may require along with their own tea towels. Although we try to keep the centre as clean and tidy as possible, it is largely used by groups involved in caving and other outdoor activities.

Occasional public courses and tours are arranged, and the Centre is open to visitors at various times of the year.

The Geology of Buckfastleigh Hill

The rate for staying at the centre is £11.00 per person per night, but please note there is a minimum group charge for staying at the centre of £132.00 per night. Therefore if your group size is 12 or less you pay the minimum group charge only, not the per person charge. If your group size is greater than 12, you pay the per person charge only, not the minimum goup charge.

There is now a winter surcharge of £11 per night per group from 1st October to 31st March.

Kents Cavern

You can visit the Centre by arrangement (please contact the Education Officer), or take part in one of the guided walks which are advertised locally during the summer months. Educational groups from schools, colleges and universities use the Centre at all times of the year, and there are good facilities for small residential and day courses. The Museum houses a range of exhibits dealing with most aspects of cave studies.

The centre is a registerd destinataion for The Childrens University.
